00:00:00
With over 1 billion members and 70 million company pages on LinkedIn it is safe to
00:00:05
say that the competition to get more eyes on your content is fiercer than ever.
00:00:10
So in today's episode, we're going to talk about my system that you
00:00:13
can use to boost your impressions.
00:00:34
G'Day everyone.
00:00:35
It is coach Michelle J Raymond, and we are back again for another episode on how you
00:00:39
can use LinkedIn to grow your business.
00:00:41
And one of the ways that we're going to be looking at in today's episode is how do
00:00:46
you get your content seen by more people?
00:00:50
And on LinkedIn, that's called impressions.
00:00:52
And if you don't know what an impression is, put simply, it is the number of times
00:00:57
that LinkedIn shows your post on a screen.
00:01:00
So imagine if you grab your phone and start scrolling, every time a post goes
00:01:04
past your eyes, that's an impression.
00:01:14
I've been creating content for coming up to 10 years next year.
00:01:18
And during that time, I've watched the platform get more and more crowded as time went on.
00:01:24
We've got more and more members that have joined the platform.
00:01:27
And now it's not just about how do you create the content, but how do you make it stand
00:01:32
out to your audience and ensure that LinkedIn supports you and keep showing those posts
00:01:38
to more and more people in your audience.
00:01:40
Now more than ever, I think it's really easy to create content.
00:01:44
It's not really easy to create content that stands out.
00:01:47
I'm sure some days, some of you feel like you're not getting anywhere.
00:01:51
My analytics currently tell me that in the last 365 days, my number of impressions compared
00:01:57
to the previous period is up over 830%.
00:02:02
So something I'm doing is right.
00:02:03
And I'm going to share with you exactly how I make sure that that's the case.
00:02:07
Before I share with you how I R.A.T.E my posts to boost my impressions.
00:02:11
Here's a quick word about our podcast sponsors, Metricool.
00:03:50
Make sure you do go and check out Metricool because it has been a game changer in our
00:03:54
business, having one place to schedule posts, store ideas and repurpose our content.
00:04:00
So check it out and let me know what you think.
00:04:03
Why did I come up with this system for rating my posts before they went out?
00:04:07
Well, quite simply, I'm just like everybody else.
00:04:10
I'm competing for that same attention.
00:04:12
And I want to make sure that for the amount of effort that I put into creating content,
00:04:17
that I get the biggest return on that investment of time, of energy, of my brain
00:04:22
power, of all the resources in my business.
00:04:25
And I want you to get exactly the same thing.
00:04:28
What I've done is I've gone back and had a look at the posts that work best for
00:04:32
me and had a look at what are the common things that each of those posts had, and how
00:04:38
could I look for that in my upcoming posts?
00:04:41
And that's where the R.A.T.E framework comes from.
00:04:43
So R.A.T.E stands for R is for Relevant.
00:04:47
A is for authentic.
00:04:49
T is for Thought Leadership and E is for Empathy.
00:04:52
And I'm going to step you through what I look for in each of my posts to make sure
00:04:56
I tick each of these four things off.
00:05:04
When I'm reviewing my posts, the first thing that I take a look at is, R is for relevant.
00:05:10
Is it relevant to my audience?
00:05:12
That is the number one thing that I start with.
00:05:15
So LinkedIn themselves have told us that the algorithm rewards knowledge and advice.
00:05:22
It wants you to talk to one audience, on one topic and drive meaningful comments.
00:05:29
That is how you boost impressions.
00:05:31
And I check this straight up to make sure that what I'm posting is relevant to my audience,
00:05:39
on a topic that they've come to know me for.
00:05:42
And it absolutely has to check this box off.
00:05:45
Does this mean I can never go off track?
00:05:48
Of course not.
00:05:49
But I just know if I go off track, my audience is going to be like a bit confused.
00:05:54
So staying on track and making sure that my content is relevant to my ideal audience that I've
00:06:01
targeted, that is aligned with my business goals.
00:06:05
It is really important that the effort that I put into is content that resonates with them.
00:06:11
So that's always the first place that I start.
00:06:14
And when I started to have a look at this, it was amazing how many times I got sidetracked.
00:06:19
And I think the solution to making sure you create content that's relevant is
00:06:23
making sure you have a content plan.
00:06:25
Writing down, what are the things that you want to be known for?
00:06:27
A content plan should outline the topics you want to talk about that are relevant
00:06:31
to the audience that you want to attract.
00:06:34
Why does this matter?
00:06:35
Well, it's quite simply, if you create the content that is relevant to the target
00:06:40
audience and it speaks to them, then they are more likely to engage, which means like,
00:06:45
or comments or press, see more, or repost.
00:06:49
If they take those actions that is a positive sign to the LinkedIn algorithm that your
00:06:54
audience is interested and that they should share it with more people in your community.
00:06:59
This is a fundamental step that you have to get right before we move on anywhere-
00:07:04
is your post relevant to your audience.
00:07:06
Second step in the framework is all about A for authenticity.
00:07:11
I've done a couple of podcast episodes around this topic.
00:07:14
But for me, breaking it down into its most simple format is, are you being you on LinkedIn?
00:07:21
I often use the term digital twin.
00:07:24
Are you creating the exact identical version of you on LinkedIn?
00:07:29
As if I was to meet you face to face off LinkedIn.
00:07:32
Quite often the struggle when clients first come to work with me is that they really know
00:07:37
they should be on LinkedIn, but the thought of putting themselves out there is quite off putting.
00:07:43
And the reason is that they want to become this LinkedIn version of themselves.
00:07:48
They think they should create content in a certain manner or format.
00:07:52
And for me straight away, we are chopping that down, challenging those assumptions.
00:07:58
There are different layers to being authentic and before you get worried, no, I'm not asking you to
00:08:03
share your deepest, darkest secrets on LinkedIn.
00:08:06
There's a very big difference between content and sharing that's way too personal and possibly not
00:08:12
for the platform, although that can be a spectrum that everybody sits along and no two people are
00:08:17
the same and that might change for you over time.
00:08:20
When you're starting out, you're probably really nervous.
00:08:23
Whereas if you've been doing it for a long time, like me, I know what to expect
00:08:27
from the community that I've built.
00:08:29
And from that perspective, I have a lot more confidence.
00:08:32
Why is this authenticity so important that you make sure that you check
00:08:36
your post that it's coming across?
00:08:38
Well, number one, authenticity is what builds trust and trust is how we can stand
00:08:45
out and really, when people are considering who they want to do business with.
00:08:49
They are going to want to do it with someone that they can relate to, and
00:08:53
that's someone that they can trust.
00:08:55
And so being the authentic version of you is a winning strategy.
00:09:00
You do not want them to have you show up in one way in your posts, jump on a Zoom
00:09:06
call and then all of a sudden, Go, huh?
00:09:10
I don't understand.
00:09:11
You're so different to how you come across.
00:09:13
The best compliment that I ever have from my podcast listeners when they reach out and we
00:09:18
have a call like this, is when they say to me, Oh my God, Michelle, you're just like, when I
00:09:24
listened to you on the podcast, or you're just the same as when I read your content, that is
00:09:28
the best compliment that I could ever ask for.
00:09:31
Being authentic is even more important on LinkedIn right now, when we have so much
00:09:36
content and comments generated by AI tools.
00:09:40
When you think about it, there is only one of you on LinkedIn.
00:09:43
This is your ultimate competitive advantage.
00:09:47
So showing up authentically as you to an audience that resonates with who you are.
00:09:53
Is again, going to go back to, they are more likely to press, like, leave you a comment or
00:09:58
take some other form of action that highlights to the LinkedIn algorithm that this is good
00:10:03
content that should be seen by more people.
00:10:06
Once again, it boosts your impressions.
00:10:30
Approaching the third step of how I R.A.T.E my post is T is for thought leadership.
00:10:35
Now I don't mean everybody wants to become a thought leader, but within this framework,
00:10:41
I want you to have a look and say, Hey, In this post, is there something that is
00:10:46
uniquely mine that shares my thoughts?
00:10:49
Based on your experience, based on your wins, based on your losses, based on
00:10:55
your predictions for the future and your knowledge and your experience and
00:10:58
the things that you've been through.
00:11:00
This is what thought leadership is to me.
00:11:02
And again, it comes back to so much AI generated content, all sounds same, same.
00:11:08
So how are you going to create your content that distinguishes you outside of all of that?
00:11:13
So by sharing your thought leadership pieces, which is your unique experiences,
00:11:19
your unique point of view, this is a way that you can stand out.
00:11:23
And the best part about this is you are going to start to attract people
00:11:28
that appreciate your unique insights.
00:11:32
They're coming onto LinkedIn to be educated, entertained, inspired, and by putting
00:11:38
your thought leadership content out there, this is how you can become the magnet
00:11:43
to attract the right type of community.
00:11:45
Why is the right type of community important when we're talking about boosting impressions?
00:11:50
Quite simply because the right type of community will enjoy your content.
00:11:54
And we're back to it again.
00:11:55
What boosts impressions is likes and comments and other forms of engagement.
00:12:01
So the more that you can do this, if you want to know what the LinkedIn
00:12:04
algorithm loves most, It loves comments.
00:12:07
It is wanting you to generate meaningful comments.
00:12:11
How can you do that by generating a post that has meaningful content that drives those
00:12:19
comments and engages people and ask them, come and contribute to this conversation.
00:12:24
The other thing about thought leadership that I just want to throw out there is I know that
00:12:28
there are a lot of viral templates that you can use and they become popular and if you
00:12:34
use them, you might be thinking, Oh, great.
00:12:36
Look at my numbers.
00:12:37
They just went up.
00:12:38
I've got way higher impressions than I normally do.
00:12:41
Except the problem is, are those sets of eyes that are seeing your content and seeing these
00:12:47
viral templates that you've just used, which are copies of somebody else's work out there.
00:12:52
Let's just throw that out there.
00:12:54
It's borderline plagiarism, no matter how much you kid yourself, that if you
00:12:57
change a couple of words, it's not.
00:13:00
But if you think about it, you're now getting seen by a totally random audience.
00:13:05
And that is not where your business opportunities are going to come from.
00:13:09
So you might feel popular for a moment.
00:13:11
You might actually get swamped with an inbox and comments and notifications,
00:13:16
and it's going to send you off track.
00:13:17
And we're all about on this podcast, making sure that we use LinkedIn efficiently and effective
00:13:24
to generate business opportunities for growth.
00:13:26
That is why we are always aiming for authentic thought leadership.
00:13:57
The fourth step, as I R.A.T.E my posts is E for empathy.
00:14:00
And I think this is possibly the most important step in the whole framework.
00:14:05
The reason that it's important is that there is so much content that goes out there.
00:14:10
That is all about me, me, me.
00:14:12
So it's generated to make the person that's posting the content look better, sound
00:14:17
better and apparently it's all about ego.
00:14:20
Now, if you want success on LinkedIn and to boost impressions, think about why are the
00:14:26
people out there on LinkedIn scrolling right now?
00:14:29
Have empathy for a day in the life of your target audience.
00:14:33
So pick a job, any job, the person that's out there.
00:14:36
That's your B2B buyer.
00:14:38
Think about what is it that they're measured on day by day.
00:14:41
So what are the KPIs?
00:14:43
Think about what stuff happens out there in their day that gives them headaches.
00:14:49
Create content that speaks to either one of those two things, and you
00:14:54
will immediately get their interest.
00:14:57
And again, if you get their interest, they're more likely, if they find it
00:15:01
valuable to press like, or comment.
00:15:04
And these are the things again, that help us get more impressions.
00:15:08
And so from this perspective, I think empathy is missing from a lot of the content.
00:15:14
It's what keeps things real.
00:15:16
It's what keeps us connected.
00:15:17
It's what builds community.
00:15:19
And these are the things that boost your impressions.
00:15:22
It is not about copywriting hacks.
00:15:24
It's not about, you know, posts at certain times of the day.
00:15:27
It is starting to think about who is the person that I am creating this content for.
00:15:33
And how can this content make a difference to them?
00:15:36
This is a massive switch for most people in their content.
00:15:40
And I find it when I'm working with businesses on their company pages, first and foremost,
00:15:45
is it's always all about the company.
00:15:48
And again, if we just flip the switch and start going, how does the company solve
00:15:53
the problems for the people out there?
00:15:55
What are the solutions that they offer?
00:15:57
How can you make the biggest difference to the B2B buyer that's
00:15:59
out there on the other side of things?
00:16:01
Start creating content from that space and watch your numbers soar.
00:16:04
So there you have it listeners.
00:16:05
You can now R.A.T.E your posts just like I do before you put them out onto LinkedIn.
00:16:10
And this works for your company page and your personal posts.
00:16:14
The system works for both.
00:16:15
That's the beauty of it, but I want you to go back and have a look at your content.
00:16:20
And have a look and say, did I tick off all four of those steps or was something missing that
00:16:25
maybe for next time you can look to improve.
00:16:28
So speaking of improvements, I have one shout out to LinkedIn on this one for a new
00:16:32
feature that I think you should be aware of.
00:16:34
It's rolling out and that is with scheduled posts they are now able to be edited.
00:16:40
Hallelujah.
00:16:41
It is so exciting.
00:16:42
So this means for those of you who have avoided using the scheduling tool on LinkedIn,
00:16:48
because you can't edit posts after they've been done, you used to have to delete it
00:16:53
and start again, which is really annoying.
00:16:56
Well, now you can edit those.
00:16:57
So that's going to be a great change that will probably roll out over time,
00:17:01
but keep an eye out for that one.
00:17:02
And if it's something that you avoided scheduling posts on LinkedIn directly, then it might
00:17:07
be something that is worth taking a look at.
00:17:09
So until next episode, listeners keep looking for those opportunities on LinkedIn.
00:17:13
They are yours to take.
00:17:15
Cheers.
