LinkedIn changed this data privacy setting without notifying members, which means many members are now automatically opted-in to allow LinkedIn AI to use your personal data and content for training LinkedIn's generative AI content.

Michelle J Raymond: G'day everyone.
00:00:00
It is Coach Michelle J Raymond.
00:00:02
I've got a really important public service announcement.
00:00:06
This is only going to be quick, but something changed on LinkedIn this week and it's a
00:00:10
settings change, which I can't believe that they just did it without letting us know.
00:00:15
And I think it's really important that you are aware because you are automatically
00:00:20
opted in as a yes you agree to this setting, even without knowing about it.
00:00:27
And I think it's really uncool by LinkedIn.
00:00:47
Now, a couple of disclaimers here.
00:00:49
If you are in Europe, I think your GDPR laws cover you and you may not have had this happen to you.
00:00:55
If you're in the UK, I know that one of the governing bodies over there literally
00:01:00
called LinkedIn out, put a stop to this and said, we need to talk about this before you
00:01:05
automatically opt in people from the UK.
00:01:09
Here in Australia, it's still switched on automatically.
00:01:13
And in the US I believe it's the same at this point in time.
00:01:16
So let's talk about how you are now opted in as a yes automatically to choosing
00:01:25
your content to train the generative AI.
00:01:29
So everything that you do on LinkedIn is helping train the generative AI.
00:01:34
Because this is such a big deal, I just want you to have the choice.
00:01:39
If you are someone that goes, who cares?
00:01:42
That's the way of the world.
00:01:43
Just leave it on, you know, can't stop it.
00:01:46
It's their platform.
00:01:47
Then that's fine.
00:01:49
But if you are someone that doesn't want that to happen, I want you to have the
00:01:53
way that you can easily switch this off.
00:01:55
So you can opt out.
00:02:02
If you want to go and check this setting for yourself, here's how you do it.
00:02:05
Log into LinkedIn, top right hand corner, click on your photo and go down to settings and privacy.
00:02:11
That will open up a new window and on the left hand side, you have data privacy.
00:02:17
So click on that.
00:02:18
And then under the, how LinkedIn uses your data, there is a data for generative AI improvement.
00:02:26
I'm just going to read exactly what it comes up with so that you're kept in the loop as well.
00:02:30
So it says data for generative AI improvement.
00:02:33
Can LinkedIn and its affiliates use your personal data and content you create on LinkedIn to
00:02:40
train generative AI models that create content?
00:02:45
They have you automatically opted in, like I said, but you can switch it off.
00:02:50
I have to say I am super passionate about switching this off for myself because I
00:02:55
have a LinkedIn premium account, and I have clicked around and tried some of those
00:03:01
AI responses that come when you want to find out more info on a particular topic.
00:03:05
And these little prompts show up underneath posts.
00:03:08
And I had a look at one of the ones that said, find out more about page advocacy,
00:03:13
which is a term that I created for my podcast about half a dozen episodes ago.
00:03:19
I thought this will be interesting.
00:03:20
Let me go and have a look and see what it has to say about something that I created.
00:03:24
And it kind of regurgitated back what I had written about on LinkedIn.
00:03:29
So I do newsletters and I've spoken about it in posts and I know that nobody else has
00:03:34
spoken about it because I created it and I did a whole bunch of research beforehand.
00:03:39
And let's be clear, not too many other people on LinkedIn are talking
00:03:42
about company pages as much as I am.
00:03:45
And lo and behold, it basically regurgitated back my words.
00:03:50
But it didn't give me any credits.
00:03:53
And that's the piece of the puzzle that I'm so mad about.
00:03:56
I love the idea that they can use my work, but credit where credit's due.
00:04:01
I don't want to live in a world where you can just take anybody's work and present
00:04:05
it as your own by mixing it all up.
00:04:07
And I appreciate that maybe there's no real original concepts anymore, but I
00:04:12
don't want to let go of the, you know, just giving credit to people who have
00:04:16
worked hard to come up with original ideas.
00:04:19
So go and check it out for yourself.
00:04:20
There's no right or wrong, but I want you to make sure that you have consciously
00:04:25
had the opportunity to make a choice.
00:04:27
That's best for you.
00:04:28
Until next week.
00:04:29
Cheers.
